Australia's Immigration Minister Brendan O'Connor has rejected criticism of living conditions in the asylum seeker processing centre on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

During a visit to the Manus centre Mr O'Connor spoke to staff and met 20 asylum seekers.

Critics of the government's offshore detention policy say the living conditions for detainees are harsh and oppressive, but Mr O'Connor says he disagrees.
