Updated 22 July 2014, 17:21 AEST

Delegates to the AIDS 2014 Conference in Melbourne were told Danish researchers have made a major breakthrough in the search for an HIV vaccine.

The team from Aarhus University is using anti-cancer drugs to "kick" latent virus cells into life.

The research was made public on the same day that another group of scientists shared their study showing a significant fall in the number of deaths connected to HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
