The issue of compensation for people who may have been affected by nuclear testing on the atolls of Mururoa and Fangataufa in French Polynesia has been highlighted by a recent news report in France.

Epidemiologist Florent de Vathaire is quoted in the newspaper, Le Parisien saying there is a "likely link" between the radioactivity generated by the nuclear tests and the development of various forms of cancer.

The newspaper says his report establishes a new link between nuclear tests in the Pacific and North Africa and cases of cancer among civilians and former military personnel.

The French conducted 210 nuclear tests in Algeria, a former French colony, and French Polynesia between 1960 and 1996.

Isabelle Genoux asked Roland Oldham from the nuclear tests veteran association in Polynesia, Mururoa e tatou, if the new report will speed up compensation claims.
