Amnesty International says Australian Government officials have acknowledged the situation for asylum seekers on Nauru is far from ideal and not what was envisaged, comments denied by the Immigration Minister's office.

Representatives from Amnesty visited Nauru last week and described the conditions there as 'inhumane'.

Today the organisation's refugee coordinator, Graham Thom, met with officials from the Immigration Minister's office to relay his concerns.

Canberra Correspondent Stephanie March reports.
