Apia harbour cleans up its act

Updated 10 June 2014, 8:09 AEST

People living along the banks of two rivers in Apia took part in a major cleanup over the weekend.

It was not just about removing rubbish from the rivers but identifying the types of rubbish so that Samoa's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment can set up new recycling schemes as part of an effort to prevent further pollution of the rivers.

Esther Richards, the Solid Waste Management Adviser at SPREP - the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - has the ardous job of analysing the waste.
