Australian prime minister Tony Abbott's recent two day visit to Papua New Guinea is being described as a milestone in relations between the two Pacific neighbours.

That's the assessment of Brett Mason, Australia's Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

Senator Mason says that aid is becoming less significant as both nations move towards being strategic and economic partners.
