Australia expecting heatwave conditions

Updated 4 January 2013, 10:52 AEDT

Many Australian centres today will be dealing with extreme temperatures, and the mercury is expected to keep climbing even higher next week.

The Bureau says a weather system is pushing hot air from the middle of the country to the coastal fringes. The temperature is forecast to reach 46 degrees at Tarcoola, in South Australia's north west, tomorrow, and 47 degrees on Monday. One publican in outback South Australia says it's so hot, just being outside is too much to bear.

Presenter: David Taylor

Speaker: Peter Clegg, duty forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology in Perth; Sam Tracey is the owner of the Barmera Hotel South Australia
