Australia suspends use of diuron herbicide

Updated 30 November 2012, 18:25 AEST

Australia's Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority has suspended the use of diuron in high risk areas largely to address concerns about runoff into the Great Barrier Reef and regional waterways.

The move will have a significant impact on the sugar industry in Australia's north-east, but isn't going far enough according to conservation groups.

The Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority itself says further regulatory action is likely.
