Australian immigration minister rebuts Amnesty Manus report

Updated 12 December 2013, 17:41 AEST

Amnesty International has released a report which it says identifies major issues with the conditions and management of the Australian-run asylum seeker processing and detention centre on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

The report was compiled after a team of researchers visited the centre last month for an inspection, a visit done with the consent and knowledge of the governments of Australia and PNG.

But if those governments were hoping that an inspection would back what they say are improving conditions for over 1000 asylum seekers on Manus, they are likely to be disappointed.

Presenter: Pacific correspondent Campbell Cooney

Speaker: Kate Schuetze, Pacific researcher with Amnesty International; Rimbink Pato, PNG Foreign Minister; Scott Morrison, Australian Immigration Minister
