Australia's Environment Minister Tony Burke says he's been given legal advice that he doesn't have the power to block the super trawler the Margiris.

The 142-metre Dutch-owned trawler, arrived in Australia last week.

The company, that plans to operate the Margiris, Seafish Tasmania has an 18,000 tonne allocation of Jack Mackerel and Redbait it can take from Australian waters.

There's continuing protests against this plan by conservationists and fishermen, but Mr Burke says he will impose a series of strict conditions on the ship's trawling.

Michael Vincent reports, the Director of Seafish Tasmania Director Gerry Geen says the restrictions are quite reasonable
