Bid to ban polygamy in PNG

Updated 13 December 2012, 9:25 AEDT

There will be a move in Papua New Guinea to try to ban polygamy.

PNG's first female Governor, Julie Soso says polygamy is an excuse to abuse the human rights of women and must be outlawed.

It's a customary practice for Chiefs or "Big Men" in many Highlands provinces, however Ms Soso says a lot of men are using it to abuse women.

She'll introduce a bill in Parliament in the New Year to ban polygamy.
