Call for better evaluations of aid programs

Updated 30 January 2013, 9:58 AEDT

Evaluations are all too often not built into aid programs, making it difficult to gauge how effective they are.

It can result in good money going to waste rather than having an impact on education, health and poverty reduction. American economist Ester Duflo is trying to change that. She studies evaluation programs with a view to making them a lot more efficient - by taking into account the behaviour and choices of people on the receiving end of aid in countries like India and Indonesia.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts

Speaker: Professor Ester Duflo, Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
