Call for election overhaul in Vanuatu after major irregularities

Updated 30 July 2013, 8:42 AEST

There are calls for a complete overhaul of Vanuatu's electoral system, following the release of a report on last year's national election.

The Transparency Vanuatu report highlights a range of improprieties including large scale fraud involving proxy votes and a lack of transparency when votes were re-counted.

The report also shows major flaws with voter registration, estimating nearly 40 per cent of eligible voters were either invalid, dis-allowed or fraudulent.

Marie Noel from Transparency Vanuatu says longstanding complaints have not been addressed and the entire electoral system needs to be reviewed.
