Call for risk reduction programs in Marshall Islands

Updated 6 September 2013, 11:40 AEST

People in the northern atolls of Marshall Island are worried about running out of drinking water again.

The Red Cross says people on Namu have told them drought will return and again threaten their livelihoods and drinking water.

International aid groups were called in earlier this year when drought devastated 15 northern atolls in the Marshalls.

The Red Cross operations co-ordinator in Marshall Islands, Victoria Bannon, says there's an urgent need for risk reduction programs to help hazard-prone communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
