Call to recruit more midwives with a Pacific background

In New Zealand, an independent health review has identified a higher rate of mortality among new and unborn babies in the Pacific and Maori communities.

According to the report which centres on communities in Auckland, Waikato and Hauraki, Pacific and Maori women are at a greater risk of being exposed to factors that could contribute to the deaths of unborn and newborn infants.

Margie Apa, Director of Strategic Development at the Counties Manukau District Health Board says more Pacific midwives could go a long way to solving the problem.
