Calls for sex registry in Samoa

Updated 27 March 2013, 11:29 AEDT

A Samoan judge has restated his call for a sex offenders register to be set up, after sentencing a serial sex offender to 20 years in jail.

Under existing laws, the names of those guilty of sex crimes are suppressed to protect the identity of victims.

But Justice Vui Clarence Nelson argues the number of repeat offenders coming before the courts points to the need for change.

The judge's original recommendation is under review by the Law Reform Commission.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Leilani Tuala-Warren, chief executive Law Reform Commission
