Caution needed as Fiji & PNG militaries move closer - Rabuka

Updated 9 May 2013, 8:57 AEST

Fiji's cabinet has approved defense cooperation between the Fiji Military and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.

The agreement stems from recent bilateral talks between interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and his PNG counterpart Peter O'Neil.

The cooperation could see PNG military personnel joining Fiji soldiers in overseas peacekeeping missions.

Two of the regions seasoned commanders - Majors General Sitiveni Rabuka and PNG's Jerry Singriok agree in principle that an defence agreement is possible but both believe there could be soverignty issues if Fiji and PNG personnel participate in overseas peackeeping missions.
