China invited to send warships to next RIMPAC exercise

China invited to send warships to next RIMPAC exercise

The United States has invited China to send warships to the biennial Rim of the Pacific naval exercise or RIMPAC to be held off Hawaii next year.

The exercise involves 22 nations including Australia which has also invited China to join a naval review in Sydney later this year.

Paul Dibb is a former Australian Defence Ministry advisor and professor of strategic and defence studies at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Fran Kelly asked him about the importance of the invitations.
