Church welcomes rejection of euthanasia clinic in Fiji

Updated 27 August 2012, 16:59 AEST

Fiji's Methodist Church has welcomed the news that an assisted suicide clinic will not be allowed to set up in the country.

Australian euthanasia advocate, Dr Philip Nitschke said the proposal could earn the country considerable income if it went ahead

But permanent secretary of information, Sharon Smith-Johns, says the proposal to locate a euthanasia facility in Fiji would never have been seriously considered.

Reverend Tevita Banivanua, deputy general secretary of the Fiji Methodist Church, tells Bruce Hill that Fijian Christians would never have supported the idea of helping terminally ill people to die, as that is something only God can decide.
