Circumcision ceremony goes badly wrong

Updated 23 January 2014, 9:37 AEDT

Traditional Aboriginal elders in Australia's Northern Territory concede mistakes were made in a ritual circumcisation that left three boys badly injured.

The boys were so badly cut in the ceremony at Borroloola that they were flown to Darwin for urgent medical treatment. The Northern Territory Government says its aware of the case, though thus far its investigators have found the injuries do not constitute child abuse. The traditional elders who organised the ceremony say the initiation ritual plays a vital role in their culture.
