Cook Islands appoints new Queen's Representative

Updated 10 June 2013, 9:53 AEST

Cook Islands' Deputy Prime Minister Tom Marsters has been appointed as the new Queen's Representative.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Henry Puna, who described Marsters as a "diplomat".

The decision means Marsters will vacate his parliamentary seat to take up the new role.

And as a result, a by-election for Marsters' constituency of Muriena will most likely take place in August.

Cook Islands Daily News Editor, Helen Greig says the appointment has been a long time coming.
