Cook Islands rugby caught in funding Catch 22

Updated 1 April 2014, 11:15 AEDT

Rugby in Cook Islands is looking to secure a boost in funding by toppling Pacific rivals Fiji in a 15-a-side World Cup qualifying match in June.

That's the next goal, after the Cooks squad, lost two out of three games at the Hong Kong Sevens.

One of those defeats was at the hands of Japan, who went on to win the qualifying tournament, and secure a much prized spot in the IRB World Series for next season.

Cook Islands' team manager, Cam Kilgour, says his players performed well, but they didn't make the most of their opportunities.
