Cyclone forming near Solomons, Vanuatu, New Caledonia

A tropical depression south of Solomon islands is expected to become a tropical cyclone soon.

The weather system, which is expected to be named Cyclone Frieda, is heading southeast, and could affect Vanuatu and New Caledonia by New Years Eve.

Sanjay Prakash, the duty forecaster at the weather office in Nadi, Fiji, says it could become a category three storm.
