Updated 13 November 2012, 10:28 AEST

The Catholic Church in Australia is standing by its handling of allegations of sex abuse of children in its ranks, following the Prime Minister setting up a Royal Commission into child sex abuse.

Julia Gillard says there's been a systemic failure to respond to the issue, and has indicated recent revelations about priests being sheltered by the Church clinched her decision.

The Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne and president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Dennis Hart, says the Royal Commission will help clear the air for the church.

Presenter: Lexi Metherell
