Virtually all of the 174 children in immigration detention on Christmas Island are sick .

. that's the assessment of the Human Rights Commission after visiting the detention centre last week.

Commission president Professor Gillian Triggs is conducting a year-long inquiry into the mandatory detention of children seeking asylum in Australia.

She says conditions have worsened since her last visit four months ago, but there is one "ray of light" -- the children will soon be able to go to school.
