Draw with Oman leaves Australian World Cup hopes in the air

Updated 27 March 2013, 13:01 AEST

Australia have slipped to third in their Asian World Cup qualifying group after they could only manage a draw against Oman in front of 34,000 fans in Sydney.

The result was made worse for the Socceroos when group leaders Japan surprisingly lost 2-1 in Jordan, allowing the Jordanians to move into the second automatic qualification spot.

But it could have been even more dire for Australia because five minutes into the second half they were trailing Oman by 2 goals to nil.

So is it a point gained or two lost?
