The huge problem of sexual violence against women in Papua New Guinea is one that has been well-documented in recent months.

The United Nations estimates that as many as four out of five women in PNG will experience rape or sexual abuse at some point in their lives.

It's a statistic that has prompted the European Union to step in with a donation of some $A2.3 million.

The EU ambassador in Port Moresby, Martin Dihm, says the money will fund a series of projects run by the humanitarian organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres.
