Expert warns industrial fishing in the Pacific is putting pressure on

A meeting of Pacific Heads of Fisheries agencies will be told next week that industrial fishing is adding to the pressures fish close to the shore that Pacific Islanders rely on for food and income.

Many Pacific Island countries now have their own fishing fleets and fishing tourism is growing, but the number of foreign fishing vessels operating in the region is also growing.

Dr John Hampton, Head of the Oceanic Fisheries Program at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community says industrial fishing is affecting a range of species including tuna and wahoo.
