So in the end Fiji, Hong Kong Sevens champions for the previous two years, had to settle for third place at this year's tournament, defeating Australia in a play-off, after going down to England in the semi-finals.

That was a hard pill for the Fijians' English coach Ben Ryan to swallow, particularly when Hong Kong means so much to Fijian sevens fans back home.

But it's just the latest twist in Ryan's seven month reign as coach.
