Diplomatic rivalry between Fiji and Papua New Guinea is affecting the wider Pacific region.

That's according to Tess Newton-Cain, a non-resident fellow at the Melanesia program of Australia's Lowy Institute.

She says relations between the two prime ministers, Peter O'Neill and Admiral Frank Bainimarama, have suffered due to a number of issues, especially the future of the Pacific Islands Forum.

Ms Newton-Cain says that PNG's Dame Meg Taylor is supposed to take up her position as Forum Secretary-General next year, but as the Forum headquarters is in Fiji, that could create difficulties.
