Gaps identified in Australian indigenous issues

Updated 12 February 2014, 18:21 AEST

Today Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott has continued the tradition of giving an annual statement to parliament on Australia's indigenous communities.

But this year he's added a new target to help "close the gap" on indigenous disadvantage. Mr Abbott says that within five years he wants all Australian children to have the same rate of school attendence. The latest "close the gap" report shows the nation is on track to halve the gap in child mortality within a decade, and is ahead of schedule on Year 12 completion. But it shows very little progress on differences in life expectancy.
