Papua New Guinea is one step closer to having its own team of heart surgery specialists after the country's first heart surgery anaesthetist completed his internationally recognised certification last week.

Dr Arvin Karu achieved the certification with the assistance of a team of Australian doctors as part of the Operation Open Heart program which aims to make doctors in PNG self sufficient.

Dr Karu says the Open Heart program is an ongoing project which aims to build a fully-fledged heart surgery program in PNG.
