Immigration minister heads to Nauru

It's just over seven weeks since Australia's Government announced the reinstatment of offshore processing to deal with the influx of asylum boats.

Since then, 57 vessels have arrived carrying almost 3,500 asylum seekers.

But only 148 passengers  have since been transferred to temporary accommodation on Nauru.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen is on his way this morning to the Pacific Island to see first hand how regional processing arrangements are progressing.

After Nauru, he'll head to the other player in the Pacific Solution Mark 2 , Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.
