Malaysian airliner search continues

Updated 19 March 2014, 20:18 AEDT

An international search team is scouring an area 3000 kilometres south west of Perth, for Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, missing now for 10 days.

Australian authorities are coordinating the Indian Ocean section of the search effort with New Zealand and American patrol planes, and say they've also enlisted the help of three merchant vessels in the area. The area covering more than half a million square kilometres is one of several leads authorities are focusing on and is based on fresh information suggesting the plane was deliberately diverted from its original route. Meanwhile some of the families of the Chinese nationals on board the aircraft are threatening hunger strikes in protest at the Malaysian government's handling of the situation.
