Maori language app gets an expansion

Updated 25 February 2013, 19:47 AEDT

A Maori language program for mobile phone and computers is being launched late this week.

Called Hika Explorer, it builds on an earlier version called Hika Lite, which enables English speakers to construct entire sentences in Maori by selecting different words and phrases from a list.

The person behind the expanded version, Auckland university lecturer Sophie Tamati, tells Bruce Hill the application provides a window into the Maori language for non-Maori speakers.

Presenter: Bruce Hill

Speaker: Auckland university lecturer Sophie Tamati
