Mobile phone app helps send remittances to Pacific

Updated 16 January 2013, 16:54 AEDT

A new mobile phone app is being introduced to make it easier and cheaper to send money to certain Pacific Island countries from overseas.

Fijians, Tongans and Samoans living and working in Australia and New Zealand will be able to use the app from telecom company Digicel to directly pay bills in their home country, such as school fees.

Digicel say competition for business among banks and mobile phone companies mean the cost of sending remittances to the Pacific will continue to drop in future.
