The recently-formed umbrella organisation for West Papuan independence groups has lodged a fresh application for membership of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

An attempt by one of the groups to join the MSG was knocked back last year, with a call for a more representative bid.

Last December, three of the main West Papuan independence groups came together in Vanuatu to form a new body, the United Liberation Movement for West Papua.

Yesterday during a ceremony on the steps of the MSG Secretariat in Port Vila, the ULMWP handed a fresh membership application to the director general Peter Forau.

The movement's spokesman Benny Wenda says it's a significant moment in their fight for independence from Indonesia.
