Nauru to open its courts to asylum seekers

Updated 19 September 2012, 16:53 AEST

The government of Nauru has ruled out accepting women and children asylum seekers until some modifications are made to the Australian detention centre on the island.

At the moment, the centre consists mainly of a tent city and the first people sent there are mainly Sri Lankan men.

Nauru's Foreign minister Kieren Keke says the asylum seekers will have the right to appeal if their refugee claims are rejected and will have access to the local courts.

Alexandra Kirk reports, Australia's human rights watchdog has questioned the capacity of Nauru's legal system to cope with the influx of asylum seekers.
