Moves are afoot to train more veterinarians to work in the Pacific.

The Commonwealth Veterinarian Association conference in Fiji this week has heard that the country is introducing a veterinary diploma course.

This is being applauded by the World Society for the Protection of Animals, which is particularly keen on emphasising the role of animals in helping communities recover from natural disasters.

It's disaster management operations director, Dr Ian Dacre, says there's a huge lack of trained vets in the Pacific.
