New 24-hour hotline for PNG mums

Updated 2 November 2012, 9:56 AEST

Papua New Guinea's record on maternal and infant health is notoriously poor, but a new hotline in Milne Bay Province is aiming to improve the safety of women giving birth.

The free telephone service will connect women going into labour in remote and rural areas with health workers who can give real-time advice in the event of complications.

The new service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be manned by trained health workers at Alotau Hospital labour ward. It will be piloted for several months, with a view to rolling it out across the country.
