The challenge of balancing economic development and traditional values is something that confronts many Pacific island communities.

And it's the central theme of a prize winning documentary from New Caledonia.

'Nickel, the Kanaks' Treasure' won the Grand Jury Prize at the Pacific International Documentary Film Festival in Tahiti.

Co-director Anne Pitoiset says 25 years ago nickel was synonymous with the dispossession of the Kanak people, but now it's seen as the pathway to economic independence.

Presenter: Isabelle Genoux
