New NZ Pacific research centre to focus on practical solutions

Updated 28 June 2013, 17:15 AEST

A new centre for Pacific studies being set up by New Zealand's Massey University will try to get academic work out into the real world.

That's the intention of its director, Tongan political scientist Dr Malakai Koloamatangi.

The Pacific Research and Policy Centre will be ready to start operating at Massey's Albany campus in north Auckland in around a year.

Dr Koloamatangi tells Bruce Hill there's a need to combine scholarship about the Pacific with on the ground solutions.
