It's been a long time coming but Australia's new National Rugby Championship kicks off tonight, with the opening match featuring Brisbane City at home to Sydney Stars.

Nine teams in all will take part in the inaugural season; two from Queensland, four from NSW, including three Sydney teams, and one each from Melbourne, Perth and Canberra.

And those teams will be playing to a new set of rules.

Georgina Robinson, chief rugby correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald says rugby bosses are hoping for smart, creative rugby under the new rules.

Presenter: Richard Ewart
