New training for midwives in Vanuatu

Updated 10 July 2014, 9:05 AEST

In some good news for Vanuatu's health system, its Midwifery training school is set to open its doors again for the first time in three years.

Vanuatu faces a serious shortage of trained midwives, largely because there has been so little training made available in the past few years.

That in turn impacts on maternal health - last year eight women died while giving birth, in mostly remote areas with unskilled birth attendants.

Presenter: Catherine Graue

Speaker: Christine Jackson, technical adviser, Vanuatu midwifery school
