New Zealand to continue funding Nauru's judicial system

Updated 12 February 2014, 10:14 AEST

New Zealand has decided it will not withdraw its funding of Nauru's judicial system, even though the island nation has sacked its only magistrate and cancelled the visa of the chief justice.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully had threatened to suspend its grant of $NZ600,000 a year which keeps Nauru's judicial system running.

Mr McCully says that while he does not condone the actions of the Nauruan government, he wants to work towards a solution, not rake over the past.
