New Zealanders against flag change: poll

Updated 26 February 2014, 10:12 AEDT

An opinion poll has found that only 25 per cent of New Zealanders want to change the national flag after Prime Minister John Key proposed a referendum on the matter.

Most New Zealanders seem to be happy with the flag, while a decade ago closer to half of those surveyed wanted the flag to change.

Also, the construction of a controversial open-cut coal mine owned by Bathhurst Resources has been put on hold indefinitely due to a slump in world coking coal prices.

The mine was expected to create more than 200 jobs and bring in more than $1 billion into the New Zealand economy annually.
