A winner of a Pacific leadership award says the role of palliative care in caring for people who are close to death is not widely understood in the region.

Dr Viali Lameko, the Director of Clinical Programmes at the Oceania University of Medicine in Samoa says his Greg Urwin Award, presented by the Pacific Forum, will allow him to study palliative care in New Zealand.

He says when he returns to Samoa in six months he hopes what he will have learned will lead to palliative care being made available to more people.
