O'Neill wants Australia, NZ to remain in the Pacific Islands Forum

Papua New Guinea is not trying to assert regional leadership over Fiji, according to the country's prime minister, Peter O'Neill.

But he disagrees with Fiji's calls for Australia and New Zealand to be kicked out of the Pacific Islands Forum, saying more dialogue and common sense is needed.

Mr O'Neill says Pacific nations can engage with the rising economic powers of Asia without neglecting their traditional partners in Australia and New Zealand.

The prime minister says that Asia is just as keen to engage with the Pacific, as was shown with the visits to Fiji of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Chinese president Xi Jinping recently.
