Open homes in Ramadan initiative

Updated 16 July 2013, 9:05 AEST

Last week marked the start of the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Derived from the Arabic word for intense heat and shortness of food and drink, the month of Ramadan is considered the most holy for muslims around the world.

Devout muslims abstain from food and drink during daylight hours and only break the fast after the sun has gone down.

In New South Wales, the Islamic Council has come up with a new initiative called Open Homes in Ramadan muslims are encouraged to invite non-Muslims into their homes to share a meal, ask questions and establish relationships.

Our reporter Mohamed Taha attended the launch.

Presenter: Mohamed Taha

Speaker: Amna Karahassan, dinner host
