Pacific countries call for more funding of the tuna boat observers program

Pacific Island Heads of Fisheries are alarmed over the imminent loss of funding for the highly successful tuna boat observer program.

Over the past 4 years the program has trained hundreds of Pacific Island observers who play a crucial role in reporting whether vessels owned by the powerful distant water fishing nations are accurately declaring their catch.

The tuna industry is worth $5 billion a year so their work can make a big difference to the licence-fee income received by Pacific countries, as well as to whether environmental measures are respected.

James Teri, Solomon Islands Director of Fisheries told Jemima Garrett the coninuation of the tuna boat observer program is vital.
